English Literature and Culture


Introduction

How do you place English literary classics in their cultural context? How do you relate new works to that cultural heritage? English Literature and Culture is an attractive and challenging programme that allows students optimal choice from a range of courses (that change every year) drawing on the full historical and geographical sweep of literatures in English.

Excellent teaching and high-quality research

As the oldest English department in the Netherlands we have a long established commitment to excellent teaching, and high-quality research. Our staff have received their doctorates from well-regarded Dutch universities as well as international institutions including Oxford, Cambridge, Toronto, and Edinburgh.
We’re also proud of the fact that our BA and MA programmes have been rated in 2011 as the best in the Netherlands by the two leading national university league tables.

The Master’s programme in English Literature and Culture is a full-time course which is the equivalent of 60 ECTS. As such, it typically comprises of 4 taught courses and a final thesis of 15-18,000 words. The programme includes a placement module which can be taken in place of one of the literature modules. Students of the English Literature and Culture programme may also take courses from the Master’s programme Writing, Editing, and Mediating.
