Why has religion become such an important issue in recent years? How does globalisation affect local religious traditions? Why does religious fundamentalism seem to be rising? How do religious identities impact the integration of newcomers? When does religion become violent and when is it a force for peace-building?

General information

This MA programme combines various socio-scientific approaches in order to provide a solid understanding of the role of religion in conflict situations and in peace-building endeavours.
This MA programme addresses the pivotal role of religion in the dynamics of globalisation that shape present-day societies. The programme is interdisciplinary and examines political, social, psychological and cultural dimensions. You will learn to investigate the consequences of globalisation for religious practices and identities, and will examine how religion itself is a globalising force. In this context, you will understand the relationship between religion, conflict and peace-building. You will scrutinise the potential of religion to provide meaning and identity in a globalising world.

Career prospects

In this MA programme you research the role of religion in current processes of globalisation and localisation. You learn to analyse national and international conflicts and to show how they are interwoven with religious interests and opinions. You will also gain an understanding of the different ways in which both migrants and ‘stay-at-homes ’ call on religion to establish a role for themselves in a fast-changing world.
You can make use of the knowledge and skills you acquire on this programme in different sectors:  Consulting & Policy, Media, Journalism and Publishing, Education, academic research institutes and universities.

Admission

The following requirements apply:

  • Bachelor’s degree programme in Theology or Religious Studies or in a related field in the Humanities (Arts, Philosophy) or Social Sciences (Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, Psychology)
  • Proof of English: TOEFL: 580 paper/237 computer/92 internet
    IELTS: 6.5 (not for native-speakers or Dutch students with a VWO diploma)
    - a letter of motivation stating your reasons for applying to this master programme
    - an overview of your bachelor programme including the marks you obtained
    - a curriculum vitae
    - two recommendation letters
