The PhD council is a group of PhD students within the F aculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Groningen. We seek to be broadly representative of all the different research areas of our faculty. Four of the council's members (currently the entire council) are also members of the advisory board of the graduate school. The current members of the PhD council are:

The council was established in April 2011 with the goal of facilitating representation of all PhD students of the Graduate School of Science and to help improve the quality of PhD education and training in the Graduate School. Problems and issues that arise for PhD students can be discussed here and brought to the attention of the G raduate School. Through this council, information relevant for PhD students and relevant issues at the university /faculty level can also be passed on from the Graduate School to all PhD students for discussion and feedback.

Moreover, the PhD council organizes social activities for all PhD students of the faculty, aiming to help PhD students to get to know each other.

Some examples of activities organized by the PhD council:

• PhD borrel: supplying a platform for social communication between PhD students of different departments and research groups. The borrel takes place on every first Friday of the month at the Bernoulliborg, first floor, in front of room 151.
• Representation of PhD students’ interests and views in the committee writing an external evaluation of the Graduate School (December 2011)
