Outline of the course

The course will last for two weeks and is divided in an exclusively clinical track (T1) and a combined clinical and research track (T2). It is only possible to apply for one of the two different tracks. During the morning sessions participants of both tracks are attending the same clinical lessons. For the afternoon sessions, the T1 participants will continue attending a clinical program, while the T2 participants will attend a research focussed program related to experimental oncology. After applying for either the T1 or T2 track, it will not be possible to switch tracks during the course, not even temporary.

Objectives of the course

T1-Track

The aim of the T1 track is to become familiar with cancer care in general health practice, to learn more about cancer treatment of the most common site specific tumours and to cancer related problems. Also attention will be paid to communication with cancer patients, palliative care, cancer pain treatment, terminal care and euthanasia. In the afternoon, the T1 track will continue attending a clinical program consisting of clinical reasoning, discussions about cases prepared and presented by the participants, ward rounds, the training of skills in the Clinical Training Centre, guided tours in the departments of radiation-oncology and the PET centre (Positron Emission Tomography).

T2-Track

Except the clinical issues during the morning sessions in which both tracks are simultaneously participating, the T2 track will be exclusively offered a research program during the afternoon sessions.

The aim of this research program is to get acquainted with experimental and translational oncology research from bench to bedside. Various state-of-the art laboratories will be visited and investigators will highlight their research interests, including bio-banking, targeted therapy, cancer stem cell biology and immuno-oncology.

Presentations

All participants are requested to provide a poster and abstract related to the poster. Participants following the T1-track will give a 10 minutes lasting oral presentation about the subject. Participants following the T2-track will give a 15minutes lasting powerpoint presentation about the subject.

'The summerschool was an amazing experience that I´ll always remember.' - Natalia Texeira, São Paulo, Brazil

'It was the best trip of my life so far! I had the most amazing experiences, learnt so many new things about oncology, medicine, countries, cultures and many new things about myself. Most importantly, I made new friends with whom I will cherish my friendship forever. You kept me so busy during those 2 weeks that I never had the opportunity to miss my life back in Delhi. Even as I am back here, its getting a little difficult to adjust here because I miss my 2 weeks in Groningen.'

- Prateek Shukla, Delhi, India
