Pilot project

Second and third-year students in the JSM Bachelor 'Honours' programme are given the opportunity to carry out a research project of their own, a pilot project

A Pilot project is an uninterrupted period (one to several months) of research conducted within one of the four institutes (GUIDE, BCN, SHARE and Kolff Institute) of the UMCG’s Graduate School Medical Sciences. During this period, students gain practical and technical research expertise and experience the day-to-day reality of doing research. Students can, for example, conduct research for a PhD student  and work on all aspects of performing research (eg. data collection, analysis etc.), which could result in a co-authorship.

A Pilot project must be applied for by a researcher who is employed as 'principal inverstigator' by one of the four institutes (GUIDE, BCN, SHARE and Kolff Institute) of the UMCG’s Graduate School Medical Sciences. Each year, there are deadlines (1 February, 1 May and 1 November) for submitting applications for Pilot projects.

Applications will be granted if they are of sufficient quality, the applicant is a 'principal investigator' of the Graduate School Medical Sciences and the director of the institute concerned approves the project.

Student assistantship and compensation towards research costs

If a Pilot project is approved, the student will be appointed as a part-time (30%) student assistant for one month as compensation for the work done. The department in which the student conducts the research will receive partial compensation for the costs (€500,=) of the research. Payment of the salary and the compensation for the department will be payed after the final report for the Pilot project has been accepted. The final report must be handed in not later than one year after approval.
A maximum of 2 pilot projects per student per study year can be awarded.

ECTS

6 ECTS (+ 1 ECTS if the student supervises a first-year student within the scope of a TTT project)

Procedure
1. Supervisor and student fill out and sign the Pilot project application form [DOC].

2. They send the completed and signed form to the JSM Secretariat. Each year, the deadlines for submitting Pilot project applications are 1 February, 1 May and 1 November

3. The JSM Programme Group assesses the application and communicates its assessment to the applicant(s).

4. After completion of the project, a report of the work done (Pilot project Final report [DOC]), accompanied by a brief assessment by the supervisor, must be sent to the JSM Secretariat not later than one year after approval.

5. If the report is approved by the JSM Programme Group, the credit points will be awarded to the student. The research institute concerned (either GUIDE, BCN, SHARE or Kolff Institute) will remit the bench fee to the research department  and the students salary will be payed.

If the student feels the need for a brief evaluation meeting or the JSM Programme Group deems this necessary, such a meeting will be part of the conclusion of the Pilot project.
