Research report (2001)

Timmerman, Greetje, Cristien Bajema, Liesbeth Bargerbos, and Carla Geveke (2001), Ongewenst seksueel gedrag en veiligheid op school [Sexual harassment and safety at school]

Since 1995 the policy against sexual harassment is placed under the broader safety policy at schools. That policy mainly aims at tackling 'bullying, aggression, and violence'. Results of the research report of the University Center for Gender studies of the University of Groningen show, however, that through the introduction of this so-called 'Safe School' the attention for sexual harassment has declined, making schools less safe especially for girls. One of the most pivotal conclusions of this research is that 'sexual harassment' is being marginalized.

The research report 'Ongewenst sexueel gedrag en veiligheid op school' [Sexual harassment and safety at school] contains four sub-studies on the following themes: sexual harassment policy, school climate, confidential counselors, and four types of sexual harassment.

The research report can be ordered at the secretary of the UCG for € 25,-, Mevr. M.Strabbing-Brinkman, tel. 050-3636500, email: m.m.strabbing-brinkman@ppswrug.nl

Book (2002)

Timmerman, Greetje, Cristien Bajema (editor-in-chief) and Marjan Bonink. Seksuele intimidatie op school: omvang, aard en aanpak van ongewenst seksueel gedrag [Sexual harassment at school: incidence, nature, and tackling of unwelcome sexual behavior]

Sexual harassment in secondary schools has by now become a well known phenomenon. But how often does it occur? What are the consequences? What kind of precautions can a school take to prevent it? This book gives an overview of the most important research results in the field of sexual harassment at school. The information is based on a number of studies on sexual harassment in secondary schools that have been conducted in recent years by researchers of the University Center for Gender studies ( University of Groningen ). The results of these studies give insight into:

  • What sort of behavior is implied?
  • Does sexual harassment occur at every school?
  • How do students themselves describe the harassment?
  • Does it happen to girls and boys in the same quantity?
  • Does it happen publicly or secretly?
  • Is there a difference between sexual harassment performed by a teacher or by a student?
  • How do students react to such behavior?
  • Are there consequences for the students' well-being or functioning at school?
  • Is there a government policy and if so, what does this policy imply? - What possibilities do schools have to combat and prevent sexual harassment?

This book offers a practical starting point for the formation of a school or organization policy. It will assist confidential counselors in their work to prevent sexual harassment and guide those students who have experienced it. It also presents new and interesting information for educators such as parents, teachers, mentors, schoolgovernors, management, and governing organizations.

The book is published by Van Gorcum in Assen and can be obtained in bookstores, ISBN 90-232-3836-2.

Dissertation

Bajema, Cristien (2001),Omgaan met ongewenst seksueel gedrag op school. Copingstrategieën van jongeren in het vortgezet onderwijs [Dealing with sexual harassment at school. Coping strategies of students in secondary schools]

One in six students experiences sexual harassment at school. How do students deal with such experiences? This book is based on the experiences of more than 500 students attending secondary schools, who have dealt with sexual harassment at school.

First, the book describes the reactions of the students to the unwelcome sexual behavior. Do they ignore it? Do they make clear they do not like it? Are they seeking out others for social support?

Second, it gives insight into factors that are of influence for the seeking of social support by the students. This reaction is of special importance as seeking social support contributes to the well-being of students after a stressful period.

The book gives recommendations for secondary schools. These are aimed at the sex education at school. the schools' serious approach concerning the tackling of sexual harassment, and the reduction of the barrier of the confidential counselor by instituting peer mediation.

The book is published by Van Gorcum in Assen and can be obtained in bookstores, ISBN 90-232-3769-2.
