Page content: The Groningen Centre for Law and Governance (GCL)International conference on Judicial and Quasi-Judicial IndependenceOn the 25th of May 2012 prof. Suzanne Comtois is organising an International conference on Judicial and Quasi-Judicial Independence at the Hanze Sociëteit, in the city of Groningen. This conference will reflect on the parameters of the principle of judicial and quasi-judicial independence, the functions this principle plays in our democratic societies, the ways in which it is protected, its limits and its impact on the balance of power between the legislative, executive and judicial branches. The focus will be on both judicial independence and quasi-judicial independence of bodies such as regulatory agencies, enforcement authorities, advisory and complaint committees. About the Groningen Centre for Law and Governance (GCL)The Groningen Centre for Law and Governance (GCL) is the result of an initiative by the Faculty of Law at the University of Groningen. Established in December 2008, t he Centre contributes to legal research into the relationship between public and private interests. Research focuses on the interaction between public and private law and the function of law in the regulatory state. It has drawn up its own research programme for the period 2009-2013. Practically all the departments within the faculty of law are participating in this programme. [Read more...] About the Netherlands Institute for Law and Governance (NILG)The Groningen Centre for Law and Governance works in cooperation with the VU University Amsterdam Centre for Law and Governance (VU CLG). Together these centres form the Netherlands Institute for Law and Governance. This is an open platform for legal research addressing the relationship between public and private interests. The participating research centres each have their own research programme focusing on the interaction between public and private law and the function of law in the regulatory state. This theme not only calls for “internal” legal research but also for reflections on the function of law with respect to other steering tools.
