Financial aspects


Financial support through the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials

The  Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials mediates in obtaining financial support from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, to help cover the costs of printing your PhD thesis. The following rules apply for all those who defend a PhD thesis in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, with the exception of FOM OiOs.

To receive financial support through the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials for printing costs, the PhD student should do the following:

  • Include the text 
    Zernike Institute PhD thesis series 2011-nn
    ISSN 1570-1530
    and the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials logo on the lower part of the back cover of the thesis and on the half-title of the thesis (nn to be replaced by a two-digit sequence number) available from M.H. Derix of the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials Co-ordinating Office (m.h.derix@rug.nl);
  • Deliver two copies of the printed thesis to the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials Co-ordinating Office;
  • Submit the original bill for printing the thesis and a request for support (using the form provided for this purpose [PDF], and to be signed by you and your promotor) to Ms. A. Weersing of the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials Co-ordinating Office (T 4131, office 5111.0163);
  • Arrange to have the thesis available in machine-readable format (preferably pdf) through the web site of the University Library. Instructions for this transfer are available from the University Library.

The grant is limited to € 850. The amount to be paid plus the € 750,- paid by the university library (see below) shall not exceed the total of the printer's bill.

In addition to the 8-digit ISSN  (International Standard Serial Number) which denotes a book series you may
request a 13-digit ISBN (International Standard Book Number) for your PhD thesis (or other RUG
publication) via the University library. You’ll find the ISBN form at

Financial support from FWN

The following subsidy will be phased out. It is only available to PhD students whose employment contract started prior to 1 September 2008); bursary students are never eligible for this subsidy.

FWN provides additional financial support to stimulate the timely completion of your thesis. A grant of € 1000 is awarded to all Ph.D.-candidates who are employed by the University, provided they defend their thesis no later than four years and three months after the start of their contract. (Note that bursary students and FOM students do not qualify for this support.)

Financial support from RUG

The University provides financial support upon delivery of a specified number of theses to the University Library. Please see the rules in Appendix 9 of the Rules for the PhD.
