Single-Molecule Biophysics

Mission Statement

Studying processes at the single-molecule level can offer us an improved understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms. Through the removal of ensemble averaging, distributions and fluctuations of molecular properties can be characterized, transient intermediates identified, and catalytic mechanisms elucidated. We develop the physical tools to mechanically manipulate individual molecules and use fluorescence imaging techniques to visualize their behavior at the single-molecule level. We apply these techniques to study a variety of different biophysical problems in areas such as DNA replication and viral fusion. Please visit our website to learn more about our work.
