PhD scholarship programmes

Open for applications

Chinese Scholarship Council Scholarships

The Chinese Scholarship Council offers scholarships for Chinese students to do their PhD abroad. The RUG has signed a contract with the CSC, making it one of the preferred partners in the programme. This means that Chinese students applying to do their PhD at the RUG have particularly high chances of receiving a scholarship.

Every year there is one round of selection and application, closing in early spring (in 2012 the application deadline is at the end of February). Interested Chinese PhD candidates should get in contact with a prospective PhD supervisor to discuss the details of their application. For more details of the application procedure at the Graduate School of Science see our website.

Science without Borders (PhD grants funded by the Brazilian government)

Until 2015 the Science without Borders programme aims to award 75.000-100.000 scholarships for Brazilians to go abroad and foreign scientists to do research in Brazil. Brazilian students wanting to do a PhD at the Graduate School of Science can choose between a sandwich PhD and a full PhD.

- Sandwich PhD: 4-12 month scholarship that covers all costs for the student. The student has to return to Brazil at least 6 months before the thesis defence in Brazil. The student should be enrolled in a PhD programme in Brazil that is rated minimum 6 or 7 (on a scale of 7) in the latest CAPES evaluation of postgraduate programmes or 4 or 5 in case the supervisor holds a CNPq scholarship for scientific output.

- Full PhD: A scholarhip for a maximum of 48 months covering all costs for the student.

The application deadlines in 2012 are 17 February, 28 May and 27 September.

For more information, please see the programme website or contact Mrs Joyce Fongers (j.e.fongers at rug.nl) of the Office of International Relations.

CONACYT (PhD grants funded by the Mexican government)

CONACYT runs a scholarship programme for Mexicans who wish to obtain their postgraduate degree abroad. The agreement between the RUG and CONACYT covers the following:

  • successful applicants receive a four-year scholarship from CONACYT that covers living expenses and health insurance
  • the University of Groningen waives tuition fees
  • The Mexican prospective PhD student is responsible for the application process. Applicants can obtain a letter of support from the Graduate School of Science, referring to the special agreement between the RUG and CONAYCT.

Please contact Joyce Fongers (BIS/Medical Faculty) for more information.

The first call for 2012 is not yet open but is expected in the course of February; a second call is expected in April 2012.

Deadlines passed - programmes may repeat in future years

NWO Mozaiek

This NWO diversity initiative offers 4-year PhD scholarships to qualified candidates (i.e., Dutch minorities).  Applicants must be: graduates from or final-year students at a Dutch university who have received their entire university education in the Netherlands, or – if they have taken only their university Master’s degree (and not their Bachelor’s) here – have been resident in the Netherlands for at least 5 years. In addition, both of the applicant’s parents – or the applicant and minimally one parent – must have been born in one of the specified countries (see list at back of brochure). Graduates who have already obtained a doctoral research post may not apply.

The application deadline in 2012 was 31 January, and it is as yet unknown whether there will be any more calls in this programme.

Talent and Training China-Netherlands Programme

The Talent & Training China-Netherlands programme (T&T) – a collaboration between the Dutch Ministry of Culture and Education (OCW) and the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) – is a strategic initiative to recruit top quality Chinese PhD candidates to Dutch universities. The Graduate School of Science (GSS) is one of 20 Dutch graduate schools participating in the programme. For the successful candidates, a 48-month scholarship of around €1200,- per month is paid by the Chinese government.
