Talent Grants (partial tuition fee waivers)

for MSc students at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

Talent Grants are offered to make MSc programmes accessible tonon-EEA students. These grants cover parts of the university tuition fee costs; specifically, they contribute to the extra fees levied to non-EEA students (the so-called bovenwettelijke collegegeld). Talent Grants are not intended to cover living expenses or pay for research.

Available amounts

Talent Grants correspond to a 'partial waiver' of the RUG tuition fees for non-EEA students. These tuition fees currently amount to 11,229 euros per year in most cases; the maximum waiver from a Talent Grant is 75% of that, equaling 8,422 euros(note that grants are indexed based on  actual tuition fees ).

Target groups and eligibility

(1) Existing scholarship holders - MSc students who have obtained a scholarship via a programme such as Eric Bleumink Fonds or Erasmus Mundus (Action 2) may still require extra financial assistance to cover university tuition. Whenever possible (as the budget allows), a Talent Grant is typically made available for this purpose. The decision to award a grant is made on an ad hoc basis under oversight of the Graduate School Director.

Note that when a scholarship programme already includes full tuition support, the scholarship holder will not be eligible for an additional Talent Grant.

(2)Other FMNS students - Students already enrolled in one of FMNS's MSc programmes may, in exceptional cases, be nominated by a staff member for a Talent Grant to partially cover their tuition expenses. Nominations may be submitted electronically to the Graduate School Office ( ggss@rug.nl ). The decision to award a grant is made by the Graduate School Director and a small committee of faculty representatives on an ad hoc basis and as the budget allows.

Nominations must include the following:

  • a reference letter (from an FMNS staff member)
  • a motivation letter (from the student)
  • a dossier including academic transcripts

It should be clear from the application dossier that the student in question is performing well in his studies and has no other means of paying tuition fees.
