Theunis Piersma was awarded a TOP-grant of the Dutch Science Foundation (NWO). With this grant of 750.000 Euro he will develop new tracking tools that allow the study of individual movements in several species of shorebirds.

Janne Ouwehand, Rob Bijlsma and a team embarked on a collaborative expedition with the University of Legon to study the wintering ecology and the timing of departure of pied flycatchers from the wintering grounds in Ghana. Read their first report [PDF]here.

We are proud that the book Living on the Edge by Leo Zwarts, Rob Bijlsma, Eddy Wymenga and Jan van der Kam was awarded the Best Bird Book of the Year by the British Trust of Ornithology.

T heunis Piersma was awarded a 3 mEuro grant from the Dutch Ministery of Infrastructure and the Environment for the project METAWAD. In this collaborative project between NIOZ and the Centre of Evolutionary and Ecological Studies (Univ Groningen) the focus is on the effects of restoration of the Waddensea ecosystem on the demography of shorebirds.
Kevin Matson was awarded a grant from the Zeleny Fund of the North American Bluebird Society to help fund a field trip as part of his on-going research (Infection, immunity, and island-life: An in-depth study of physiological and disease ecology at the spatial extremes of the disjunct geographic distribution of Eastern Bluebirds, Sialia sialis).

Irene Tieleman has been awarded a personal VIDI-fellowship from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) for her project " The impact of environment on avian immunity: ecology and evolution of the match between microbial communities and antimicrobial defenses".
