Article Elmer Sterken in second place of most read articles Me Judice

The article "The economic magic of the Olympic Games" writtem by professor Elmer Sterken (Dean of FEB) is in second place of the most read articles on the website Me Judice. This is an independent debate forum with the aimt to stimulate public debate amongst economists. The article first appeared on 25 July 2008 and since then it has been read 2362 times.

In the article Sterken questions to the extent the investments in the Olympic Games (20 to 30 billion dollars in Beijing) will pay themselves back. Though it seems as if the profit is in an economic growth-impulse, according to Elmer Sterken this is merely fictional. He contends that the real economic magic of the Olympics is to be found in its function as a boost for investments in infrastructure and creating a sportsculture.
