Curriculum Vitae
René Veenstra (1969) is professor at the Department of Sociology of the University of Groningen and guest professor (psychology) at the University of Turku, Finland.
He studied educational sciences and general pedagogy at the University of Groningen and gained his PhD for research into the differences in performance and progress among pupils in secondary education.
He lectures on criminality and security, and policy and interventions.
Veenstra conducts research into the development of prosocial and antisocial behaviour, the development of adolescents, friendships, bullying and parent-child interactions.
This forms part of TRAILS (TRacking Adolescents’ Individual Lives Survey), a long-term research project into the physical and mental health of children on their way to adulthood.
Veenstra is a member of the TRAILS management team and currently coordinates a project to spot bullying and prevent it.
In the coming years he will be introducing the KiVa anti-bullying programme to the Netherlands and evaluating it.
