LWP - Linux workstation

What is an LWP

The LWP is a standardized university workstation based on Linux. It is available to both staff and students and has a large number of applications pre-installed. You can use your employee or student number and password to log in.

Linux distribution

The LWP uses the Ubuntu Linux LTS distribution. LTS is an acronym for Long Time Support. The current distribution is 10.04 or Lucid Lynx.

Applications

Next to the applications included in the Ubuntu distribution, you can use a number of extra applications within the University network. Some of these applications are limited to certain institutions due to license restrictions. These applications include e.g. Matlab and SPSS.

Desktop

The LWP uses the KDE desktop by default. Through the login menu you can also choose to use the Gnome desktop.

LWP home directory and Windows X: drive

Every LWP user has a home directory on the university network. This is not (yet) the same directory that is used as home directory for the university Windows workstations (UWP), the X-disk. It is however possible to access the X-disk from an LWP. For more information please check this manual.
