André Aleman

Prof. dr. André Aleman (1975) is hoogleraar Cognitieve neuropsychiatrie bij de afdeling Neurowetenschappen van het UMCG en de afdeling Psychologie van de RUG. Aleman is een innovatief, vooraanstaand hersenonderzoeker. Zijn onderzoek naar psychiatrische stoornissen van de waarneming, zoals hallucinaties bij schizofrenie, is internationaal bekend. Hij doet onderzoek naar onderwerpen als zelfmoord, veroudering, schizofrenie en depressie. Aleman bracht onder andere de hersenen van schizofreniepatiënten die stemmen horen in beeld.

Vlak na zijn cum laude-promotie kreeg hij een Vidi-subsidie van NWO voor onderzoek naar emotionele stoornissen bij schizofrenie. In 2006 ontving hij een European Young Investigator Award van de European Science Foundation voor onderzoek naar verminderd ziekte-inzicht bij psychotische stoornissen. In 2012 verscheen het boek Het Seniorenbrein waarin Aleman ingaat op de vraag wat er in ons hoofd gebeurt als we ouder worden. Aleman toont daarin aan dat de achteruitgang vaak minder erg is dan we denken.

Eind 2011 ontving Aleman een Vici-subsidie van 1,5 miljoen van NWO. Aleman ontving de subsidie voor zijn onderzoek naar de onderliggende mechanismen van apathie bij schizofrenie. Apathie is ook een probleem bij andere psychiatrische en neurologische stoornissen, zoals depressie en beginnende dementie. De resultaten van het onderzoek kunnen breed worden toegepast bij verder onderzoek naar het normale en het afwijkende brein. In 2017 is Aleman benoemd tot lid van de KNAW.
