Organisation and Governance
The KNIR is one of the five Dutch Scientific Institutes Abroad (NWIB). These institutes are dedicated to supporting and conducting academic research and education. They make a significant contribution to the international profile of Dutch higher education and research.
The NWIBs are supported by the University of Groningen (UG), Leiden University (UL), the University of Amsterdam (UvA), Utrecht University (UU), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), and Radboud University, Nijmegen (RU). Administratively, the NWIBs fall under a central governing board composed of representatives of the Executive Boards of these universities. Each institute has a designated coordinating university. The University of Groningen acts as the coordinating university for the KNIR.
The institutes are primarily located around the Mediterranean region. The other NWIBs are: the Dutch Interuniversity Institute for Art History (NIKI) in Florence, the Netherlands Institute at Athens (NIA), the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo (NVIC), and the Netherlands Institute in St Petersburg (NIP).
The KNIR is headed by a Scientific Director appointed for a five-year term. In addition to the Director, three full-time academic staff members are seconded to the KNIR for three-year terms. They are responsible for teaching and research in the fields of archaeology, history, and art history, and each holds a portfolio in research, education, or communication. Due to their temporary residence abroad, additional employment conditions apply to them.
Unione Internazionale
Within the academic landscape of Rome, the KNIR is strongly positioned within a large network of universities and international research institutes. The KNIR is a member of the Unione Internazionale degli Istituti di Archeologia, Storia, e Storia dell’Arte in Roma, a community of 38 Italian and non-Italian research institutions representing 19 different nationalities. The institute is physically located in Valle Giulia, surrounded by various academic and cultural institutions from Italy and abroad.
Scientific Advisory Board
The KNIR is supported by a Scientific Advisory Board (Wetenschappelijke Adviesraad - WAR), which advises the Institute on both its policy and strategic direction, as well as on developments within the Dutch university system. The Scientific Advisory Board meets twice a year.
Members are appointed by the Executive Board of the University of Groningen for three-year terms. The Scientific Advisory Board consists of academic staff members from the partner universities and representatives of related non-university institutions.
