In Groningen, social democratic administrators and politicians dominated provincial government for many years. Their influence was felt for decades and laid the foundation for the so-called “red dynasties.” Which families and individuals were most influential? Which projects and decisions did they pursue, and how did they cooperate with, or clash with, other political actors?

In this sixth lecture of the 'Voortgang & Tegenwind' series, Stefan Couperus, Associate Professor at the University of Groningen, examines the political culture of these social democratic regents. He highlights not only their power, networks, and strategies, but also their relationships with both allies and opponents.

The lecture is part of the series, named after the book of the same title, and is organised by Erfgoed Groningen, the University of Groningen, and the Province of Groningen.
