Doc Screening |Palestine Cinema Days Around the World: Jenin, Jenin
On the anniversary of the infamous Balfour Declaration (November 2, 1917) the RKZbios, Palestine Cinema Days and The Faculty of Arts at the University of Groningen will team up to screen Mohammad Bakri's engaging and impressive documentary Jenin, Jenin - a powerful testimony to the destruction of the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank by the Israeli army in 2002, and to the voices of its survivors. The screening will be followed by a discussion with RUG staff and community members.
In 2002, during Israel’s invasion of Jenin refugee camp, journalists were barred and war crime accusations emerged. Filmmaker Mohammad Bakri entered to record residents’ testimonies, giving voice to those silenced. The film was banned, sparking legal battles and accusations from soldiers. Years later, Israel’s Supreme Court overturned the ban, restoring this raw account of a community under siege.
Launched in 2014, Palestine Cinema Days is an annual film festival taking place across several Palestinian cities. Since the start of the genocide in Gaza and ongoing Israeli military attacks on the West Bank, it has become impossible to organize this festival in Palestine. Palestine Cinema Days has become a global event: standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people, multiple cities around the world will host film screenings to shed light on the ongoing dehumanization of Palestinians and to honor their daily struggle against colonial occupation and military oppression.
Speakers this evening will be Jamil Fiorino-Habib (Faculty of Arts), Yara Yuri Safad and Mudar Al-Khufash (Faculty of Arts).
This screening is free of charge but due to limited capacity and space, we kindly ask you to reserve a ticket (via the KOOP TICKET button).
