Launch of the free city walking tour guide: The first women at the University of Groningen

From the registration of Aletta Jacobs in 1871 to the professorship of Tine Tammes in 1919; there are numerous stories to be told about the women at the University of Groningen. This city walking tour guide brings a few of these stories together. It gives participants the opportunity to follow the footsteps of the first women at the University of Groningen. In the context of the Aletta Year, the UG has collaborated with historians Sanne Meijer and Iris van den Brand. They have created the city walking tour guide that is freely available via rug.nl/alettajaar from 5 June onwards.

Opening of the academic year

Monday 6 September will mark the official opening of the 408th academic year at the University of Groningen. The start of the academic year will once again feature the expansion of the portrait gallery, which the University has been rejuvenating over the past few years. More portraits of female academics will also be mounted. The oldest portraits hung in the University’s Senate Room date from 1618.

European Researchers’ Night: two Aletta’s Kitchen talk shows

On 24 September, European Researchers’ Night takes place across the continent, including in Forum Groningen. An important part of this night is the FOOD IQ project: a series of public events that revolve around healthy eating. The programme includes two Aletta’s Kitchen talk shows held in Forum Groningen, featuring performances from food scientists, foodies and experts by experience, as well as musical performances.

The UG is working together with Hanze University of Applied Sciences and the UMCG on this edition of European Researchers’ Night.
