Data management in your funding proposal

For a  research proposal with funders like NWO, ZonMw or the EU (ERC) you usually have to describe the collection and storage of your data during the research and how data is archived afterwards regarding Open Science and FAIR principles.

Any research proposal for NWO and TNO funding requires a Data Management Section in which you have to answer questions regarding data management.
With a proposal for ZonMW funding you have to answer questions in a checklist. ZonMW strongly recommends to involve a data steward of other data management specialist in answering the checklist.

The section below provides general answers to the NWO and ZonMW questions

1. Will data be collected or generated that are suitable for reuse?

Yes: Then answer questions 2 to 4
No: Explain why the research will not result in reusable data or in data that cannot be stored or data that for other reasons are not relevant for reuse

2. Where will the data be stored during the research?

General answer: Data will be stored on the University's network drive ( UWP Data Storage ). This storage facility is compliant with the UG Research Data Policy .

Note: If you will be handling personal data, IP-related data or if you will cooperate with external partners, a more elaborate answer will be required. Also, you may want to pay attention to how to handle sensitive data in one of your work packages and consider additional costs for datamanagement in your budget.

3. After the project has been completed, how will the data be stored for the long-term and made available for the use by third parties? To whom will the data be accessible?

General answer: Data available for re-use will be archived in DataverseNL with local management by the UG.

All publications and data sets are to be registered in Pure (the UG Current Research Information System) and indexed in the UG Research Database . Part of this registration are keywords and abstracts to improve “Findability” of the data and to give information on Access.

Note: DataverseNL is the default platform. Other recommended options may suit your research data better.

The final choice for a repository can be made in the course of the project.

4.Which facilities (ICT, (secure) archive, refrigerators or legal expertise) do you expect will be needed for the storage of data during the research and after the research? Are these available?

General answer: Storage of data on the University's network drive and archiving data in DataverseNL is fully available and without costs for researcher of the University of Groningen.
Note: If you will be handling personal data, IP-related data, sensitive data from other parties or large volumes of data a more elaborate answer will be required. Consider additional costs for data management in your budget.

Did you receive the grant?

Congratulations! Your DMP has to be completed in consultation with the RDO, usually within 4 months after receiving the grant.
