Public Lecture by Heritage Groningen | Two Centuries of Provincial Governance
The provincial government of Groningen has distinguished itself over time through its ambitious outlook. Whereas other provinces tended to operate cautiously, Groningen frequently presented large-scale plans. This broad vision played an important role in the development of economic and infrastructural projects, particularly around the port of Delfzijl and the industrialisation of the region.
Speakers
In this lecture, Professor of Modern History Dirk Jan Wolffram and Associate Professor of Modern History Stefan Couperus explore how this tradition of “thinking big” emerged. What motivated the provincial government? Which opportunities did it perceive? And how did these choices influence the character and development of Northeast Groningen?
The lecture is part of the series Voortgang & Tegenwind, named after the book of the same title, and is organised by Erfgoed Groningen, the University of Groningen, and the Province of Groningen.
Start time: 20:00. The lecture is free of charge, but registration is required. Language: Dutch.
