How does it feel to be Black, LGBTQ+, or Muslim in one of Europe’s most homogenous and increasingly right-leaning countries? POLYLAND offers a powerful and intimate portrait of three women—Ania, Miriam, and Elmelda—who navigate identity, activism, and belonging in Poland.
Born and raised in Wrocław, they challenge the perception of being “the other” in their own country. Through self-help groups, protests, and public engagement, they strive to carve out space in a society that they call home. But with Poland’s rightwing political landscape shift in 2015, their fight for inclusion becomes even more urgent.
Join us for a screening of this timely and thought-provoking documentary, followed by an aftertalk on identity, resistance, and solidarity in the face of rising right-wing politics across Europe.
During the after talk we will be joined by Dr Ksenia Robbe (Faculty of Arts), whose expertise includes postcolonial literature and theory, as well as post socialist studies. Her research also focuses on anti-nationalism and anti-racism in art and activism. Dr Joanna Chojnicka (Faculty of Arts) specializes in gender and sexuality discourses, in addition to social and queer linguistics. Her academic interests include LGBTQ+ thematics, within the reality of the Polish context. Last but not least, Ewa Maslakowa, an International Relations student from Poland, with Malian roots, who is involved in activism, mostly focused on feminist, student rights and LGBTQ+ causes.
Everyone is welcome, entrance is free!
