Standard UG Workspaces

The University of Groningen provides different computing environments, commonly referred to as workplaces. These standard workplaces are available in two main types: Windows-based workplaces and Linux-based workplaces (LWP).

Windows-based workplaces

There are several Windows-based workplaces:

University Workplace (UWP)

Name
University Workplace (UWP)
Short description
  • The UWP is the standard Windows-based workplace available on your University PC.

  • You have access to the standard network drive as well as to a pre-installed set of software. Additional software installations need to be requested.

  • It is maintained and supported by the CIT.

User Managed Workplace (UFC)

Name
User Managed Workplace (UFC)
Short description
  • Similar to the UWP, this is a Windows-based local workplace installation. The main difference is that it comes with only a minimal set of pre-installed software, but you have permission to install additional software yourself. No further requests to central CIT support are needed for this.

  • You are responsible for maintenance and configuration.

  • In addition, the UFC usually has an extra network drive available: the S: Drive. It contains installation instructions for certain software that is centrally licensed.

  • Importantly, UFC installations often also have local drives available. These are usually identified by their drive letters (C:, D:, etc.). These are local disks that are not centrally backed up. If using a UFC, be careful where you store your data!

Virtual Workplace (VWP)

Name
Virtual Workplace (VWP)
Short description
  • The VWP is a fully virtualized Windows workplace that can be accessed remotely from anywhere.

  •  It is very similar to a standard UWP installation, with the difference being that it is fully virtual and that the available software is slightly reduced.

  • The UG network drives are also available.

Exceptional Workplace (EWP)

Name
Exceptional Workplace (EWP)
Short description
  • An EWP is a Windows-based PC where the software is installed by the CIT and not connected to the university network.

  • It is often used for dedicated or functional devices such as those used in labs.

  •  If the PC is required to be connected to the university network, then the user needs to install an UFC.

Virtual Research Workspace (VRW)

Name
Virtual Research Workspace (VRW)
Short description
  • The Virtual Research Workspace (VRW) is a special, secure Windows-based environment designed for projects involving sensitive data and collaboration with colleagues inside and outside the UG.

Operating System (OS)

The choice between these depends on your needs:

  • If you often need to install specific software yourself, choose a User Managed Workplace (UFC).
  • If you mainly use standard UG software, a University Workplace (UWP) or Virtual Workplace (VWP) is a better choice. Note that software available on the UWP is not always available on the VWP, so please verify whether your required software is installed in the virtual environment.
  • If you work with sensitive data or need a secure collaborative environment, the Virtual Research Workspace (VRW) is specifically designed for that because it is a closed system to the outside.

Linux-based workplaces

For users who prefer Linux, the Linux Workplace (LWP) is available. This is provided both as a physical installation on local workstations and as a virtual environment:

Linux Workplace (LWP)

Name
Linux workplace (LWP)
Short description
  • The LWP is the Linux-based standardized work environment provided by the university.

  • It can be accessed on a PC.

  • The LWP uses the distribution Ubuntu LTS.

  • A large amount of pre-installed software is available.

  • When installing new software that requires elevated user permissions, a request has to be made to the LWP team, but it is also possible to request elevated permissions that allow you to install your software yourself on your local LWP installation.
