We live in an age of rapid change. These changes also have their impact on the library world: the digital storage of information, web 2.0 applications and the changing expectations of the library user, for example.
The word ‘library’ has a Latin root and essentially means ‘a place where books are kept’. This word is starting to acquire a new meaning in the 21st century. Information is increasingly being presented and consulted in an electronic form.
Modern technology means that it is possible to do this physically or virtually. The academic library is essentially a physical entity.
Today in 2010 students mainly work electronically – with a laptop and smart phone – and do not always need physical material. But there is still a constant need for a place to work and study, as shown by the daily bustle in the libraries.
University teaching staff also do not always need the physical library. They appreciate the computerized services provided by the library, particularly for teaching and research.
Panta Rhei!
- everything flows, nothing stands still – said the Greek philosopher Heraclitus 2500 years ago. During this celebratory symposium we would like to discuss these changes and the future of the academic library…
…to gain insight into the future of the academic library and that of our own Groningen University Library in particular. Will it still be there in 2405?
Speakers involved in teaching and research at the University of Groningen, together with colleagues from the Library, will join you in discussion at this walk-in symposium. There will be three main themes: The Organization Culture, Innovation
and Content.
