Reading Rooms

University Library

The subject-specific reading rooms are on the top three floors of the University Library. Here you will find the core collections in all fields, as well as special collections such as parliamentary documents, CBS publications and encyclopaedias.

The subject-specific reading rooms have core collections arranged per discipline, for example reference books, compulsory literature, etc. The books are arranged according to subject. A visit to a reading room can be useful for an initial impression of a subject. The staff behind the desks in the reading rooms on the 1st and 2nd floor (the Digital Workstations) are qualified to answer questions about the collections. You will also find the subject arrangement plans for the collections in the reading rooms here. The General Reading Room, the Languages & Literature Reading Room and the Law and Economics Reading Room all have study booths. Every reading room has one or more work stations where catalogues and electronic literature databases can be consulted.

The reading rooms on the 1st and 2nd floor have information desks which are permanently staffed.

Borrowing books from the reading rooms

Those reading room books which can be borrowed can be signed out at the desk in the room in question; if no-one is at the desk, you can also sign out the book at the desk in a different reading room or at the main Loans Desk. Reading room books can be returned to the room in question, or left with the porters or at the main Loans Desk. The usual loan period for books from a reading room shelf is four weeks. Exceptions include:

  • Books with a label reading 'Short Loan': these books cannot be borrowed for more than ten days
  • Books with a red dot on the label: these books may not be borrowed.
