Literature searches

For a systematic literature search the following steps should be taken:

  • gaining a general impression of the subject involved; consulting specialist encyclopaedias, manuals and key publications; these are to be found in the library catalogue and the Dutch Union Catalogue (NCC)
  • conducting a specific search in bibliographies and abstracting journals.
  • using the reference list of found articles for:
  1. finding older articles (the snowball method)
  2. consulting the Science Citation Index  (SCI; part of Web of Science), in order to find the latest articles.
  • administering the literature found; bibliographic database systems such as RefWorks useful for this purpose.

There is a large know-how at the Library of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. You can always turn to the library staff for assistance. The information specialists of the library can help you with current awareness services.

The LibGuides have already made a  selection to search different databases on different subjects.

They offer:

  • inmediate access to reference works

  • daily science news items

  • links to databases

  • showing high impact periodicals

  • feeds to new (electronic) books
