Quality higher education and research cannot do without international contacts, both in the Western World and in other parts of the world. The University of Groningen has made internationalization an integrated part of its policy on research and education. International cooperation, in fact, has been valued within the University of Groningen since its foundation in 1614. In the context of increasing globalization, it has become even more relevant. An important component of the international activities of the University of Groningen are long term cooperation projects with partner universities in developing countries and countries in transition.
Within the University of Groningen the international cooperation projects are coordinated by staff of the Office for International Relations (Bureau voor Internationale Samenwerking -BIS in short).
