Chantal D'Amore wins Jan Brouwer Scriptieprijs

Chantal D'Amore has won the Jan Brouwer Scriptieprijs 2020 in the category Social Sciences for her thesis 'Moralization about "Zwarte Piet" in the Netherlands: How perceived dyadic harm by an extreme (versus moderate) group triggers moralization'. With this Chantal has completed the BSS Research Master. We asked her abour her research, societal issues and why the Zwarte Piet debate became so heated.

1. Your thesis is about the societal debates. What exactly did you research?

2. You won the Jan Brouwer Scriptieprijs in Social Sciences. Congratulations! What makes your research so special?

3. The Zwarte Piet discussion has been going on for years, what does your research add to this?

4. The discussion about Zwarte Piet is getting more and more grim. What do you think about it after this project?

5. You write that negative emotions play through in people's moral convictions. What does this mean for the social debate?

6. What do you hope will happen with your research?

Along with Chantal, another BSS student won a Jan Brouwer Scriptieprijs. Rinske Vermeij wrote the thesis 'The Place of Qualitative Research Methods in Psychology' and won in the Behavioural Sciences category.
