University of Groningen second in Elsevier ranking list

The University of Groningen has been assessed by Dutch professors and associate professors as the second-best comprehensive university in the Netherlands. This means Groningen has climbed two places in the ‘best degree programmes’ ranking list based on a survey conducted annually by the journal Elsevier. Students ranked the University of Groningen in third place among the comprehensive universities. Elsevier primarily assesses the quality of teaching.

Degree programmes

Thirteen University of Groningen Bachelor’s degree programmes were assessed as the best in the country by students: Archaeology, Business Administration, Chemistry, Computing Science, English Language and Culture, Human Movement Sciences, International Business, Life Science and Technology, Linguistics, Mathematics, Medicine, Pharmacy and Theology. In the Elsevier survey, students were asked to assess their degree programme and their university on the facilities available, the design of the degree programme, the quality of teaching and of lecturers, the testing, and the internal organization and communication.
The Bachelor’s degree programmes in Biology, Dutch Language and Culture, Pharmacy, Philosophy and Theology were assessed as the best in the country by professors of other universities.

The Master’s degree programmes are more difficult to assess. Many Master’s programmes are unique or were not assessed. Among the Master’s degree programmes that were assessed, eleven University of Groningen programmes came top of the list: Artificial Intelligence, Biomedical Sciences, Dentistry, Econometrics and Operations Research, Finance, Human Movement Sciences, Marketing, Medicine, Pharmacy, Human Resources Management, Sociology and Theology & Religious Studies. The Master’s degree programmes were not assessed by professors.
