Hummelen, prof. dr. Kees
Kees Hummelen is hoogleraar Chemie van moleculaire (bio)organische materialen aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Samen met zijn medewerkers werkt hij aan plastic zonnepanelen. Plastic is aanzienlijk goedkoper dan de grondstoffen die normaliter gebruikt worden bij de fabricage van zonnecellen. Het rendement is momenteel nog te laag om daadwerkelijk concurrerend te zijn. De elektronendonor die Hummelen gebruikt is een bijzonder soort polymeer, een zogenoemde geconjugeerde polymeer die gekleurd is en daardoor meer licht opneemt en goed geleidt. Polymeren zijn lange moleculen met ingewikkelde structuren. De andere stof, de elektronen-acceptor, is een buckyball: een voetbalvormig molecuul van zestig koolstofatomen.
