Jacquelien Scherpen

Jacquelien Scherpen studeerde Toegepaste wiskunde aan de Universiteit Twente. In 1994 promoveerde zij aan dezelfde universiteit op het proefschrift Balancing for nonlinear systems. Vervolgens werkte ze aan de TU Delft, waarna ze in 2006 hoogleraar Discrete Technologie en Productie Automatisering aan de RUG werd. Sinds januari 2013 is zij directeur van ENTEG (Engineering and Technology Institute Groningen).

Haar onderzoek richt zich met name op methoden voor ordereductie in niet-lineaire regelsystemen, waarmee het ontwerp en de implementatie van complexe niet-lineaire regelsystemen mogelijk wordt gemaakt. Ook onderzoekt ze het ontwerp van gedistribueerde, vaak niet-lineaire controllers voor complexe toepassingen. Voorbeelden van dit soort systemen zijn te vinden in de industrie, microsystemen, halfgeleiders, energiesystemen, smart grids en ruimtetoepassingen. Scherpen doet momenteel veel onderzoek naar efficiënter gebruik en verdeling van energie. Onlangs ontving ze twee subsidies van NWO voor onderzoeksprojecten op het terrein van duurzame energiesystemen.

In 2020 werd Scherpen benoemd tot Captain of Science van de topsector High Tech Systemen en Materialen (HTSM).

Scherpen was in 2023 de winnares van de Prins Friso Ingenieursprijs. "Scherpen zet zich in voor de zichtbaarheid van techniek in het algemeen, onder meer door jongeren te enthousiasmeren voor het vak van ingenieur en genderstereotypering ten aanzien van vrouwelijke ingenieurs te doorbreken. Alles bij elkaar maakt dit haar tot een rolmodel voor nieuwe generaties ingenieurs", aldus de jury.

Sinds 1 september 2023 is Scherpen de rector magnificus van de RUG.
