In this first room about the "canon of Dutch history" you can see personal objects of the first female physician in the Netherlands. Among other things you see her writing desk and cabin trunk. The displayed objects come from the private collection of Aletta Jacobs and the University Museum. On touch screens you can find information about her life and work.
Aletta Jacobs (Sappemeer 1854 – Baarn 1929) was the first woman in the Netherlands who completed a university course (in 1878), the first female physician and the first woman who obtained a medical doctorate (in 1879). She dedicated herself to the cause of women’s suffrage and world peace. Therefore she travelled the world. As a physician she was a birth control pioneer. She combatted prostitution, spoke freely about contraception and introduced the so-called “Dutch cap” in the Netherlands. She wrote an educational book for women.
