Medical instruments

Lecture in the academic hospital
Lecture in the academic hospital, ca. 1900

Clyster syringes made of tin (for administering enemas), silver blood-letting blades, the earliest x-ray tubes, a set of tools for boring into the skull (trepanation), an iron lung. This is a very diverse collection of exhibits which also contains a collection of medical instruments by the German instrument maker Mössinger. He settled in Groningen at the beginning of the 19th century and founded a company for the production of medical instruments. After the firm went bankrupt in 1952 it donated around 80 instruments to the University Museum, designed for ear, nose and throat medicine (Otolaryngology), obstetrics, ophthalmology and surgical instruments.

There are also other medical instruments in the collection, as well as different medical appliances.
