King’s Day theme at the language café!

This coming weekend is King’s Day, and we enjoy celebrating it! Café de las Lenguas is organizing a themed evening about King’s Day and the Dutch language on Thursday. The programme will include traditional Dutch games and a presentation on the history of King’s Day. It promises to be an evening full of fun, with room to expand your cultural knowledge and language skills!

New: online Ukrainian beginners course

In March, the University of Groningen Language Centre will offer a Ukrainian beginners course for the first time. The course is completely online and will introduce you to the Ukrainian language and culture. The enthusiastic and experienced teacher Yuliya Kazanova, is a Ukrainian native speaker and a scholar of contemporary Ukrainian literature.

For a while now, it has been virtually impossible to imagine writing without AI. After all, is there anyone who still writes without using an automatic dictionary? And is there anyone who does not translate their sentences using an online translator? Now that AI has been rapidly evolving, it is only a matter of knowing how to make the best use of these new technologies. We asked Jane Mahoney, English teacher and programme coordinator at the Language Centre, about how they deal with AI in the English department when it comes to language teaching.

‘Blik op Werk’ quality label extended

The University of Groningen Language Centre has retained its Blik op Werk quality standard for Dutch language courses as part of civic integration. To continue using the quality standard, the Language Centre had to pass an audit assessing the pass rate for participants in Staatsexamens, the working methods, the quality of staff and customer satisfaction.

UG's Language Centre responds to the need for qualified Dutch teachers with training programme

In February 2024, the University of Groningen Language Centre will launch its training programme in teaching Dutch as a second language (NT2). This teacher training programme will prepare participants for a career in NT2 adult education. The training programme will be taught by experienced and qualified NT2 teachers of the Language Centre.

UG Language Centre to be first official TOEFL test centre in the Northern Netherlands

As of September, the University of Groningen Language Centre is a recognized ETS Certified Test Administrator Services (CTAS) centre and is authorized to administer the official TOEFL iBT® and GRE® Tests. This makes the University of Groningen the only institution in the Northern Netherlands to administer those tests.

UG’s Language Centre uses research into healthy ageing for courses

Recent research has shown that learning a foreign language can delay the development of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease and prevent or reduce feelings of depression in later life. To further research these results, the Bilingualism and Aging Lab (BALAB) was founded at the UG. Seyit Gök, department head of the English section of the Language Centre, is a member of BALAB. Observing the positive effects that the language course had on the participants, he decided to bring the research into practice by offering language courses to people aged 60 and above.

Hanna Végh has won the Gerrit Krol Award 2023!

The third edition of the Gerrit Krol Award has been won by Hanna Végh with her essay Taal als breekijzer (language as a crowbar). As a reward she will receive a monetary prize of €2,000 and her essay will be published on the literary blog Tzum. The jury considers her essay captivating, directional, and very convincing.
