Prioritising work-life balance at UCG

Work-life balance

Hi everyone!

Now that we’ve all settled back into the routine of Uni life, we are more than ready to embrace what Caerus (our study association) has to offer. Thanks to Caerus, we get together for more than only academic purposes. If sports, parties, ski-trips or guest lectures – all year round, our committees make sure that we keep a healthy work – life balance!

Today I want to take you back to yesterday night – UCG’s first Jam session of the year. Last year, a new committee was introduced to  Caerus: The music committee. Ever since, they spoil us with some buzzing tunes every now and then. Not only that, also do they make sure that we all come together for communal drinks every once in a while because that’s what Ucg culture takes pride in – I mean the community, not the drinking of course…

During the open mic nights last year, everybody was encouraged to feel free and sing or play an instrument. They are a little bit like a UCG version of ‘the voice’, some real talents have already been brought to surface. One moment last night, I suddenly recognized it had become real silent, except for that pretty stunning male voice singing Ed Sheeran lyrics.

“It’s for charity” always is a driving factor for people to join the sesh. So speaking, to make sure everybody stays hydrated throughout the night and nobody goes hungry, the charity committee Civitas provides beer and food all night. Civitas is still in its infancy, as we have only founded it last year. Last year, we introduced some reggae spirit to the college for the sake of raising money to support the communities in the Caribbean islands. After all, we thrived at bringing together all other committees for a greater cause and made sure Caerus’ events go beyond serving only ourselves. This year, Civitas’ agenda is focused on the collaboration with ‘Just a Drop’, a charity that is based in the UK and works on grassroots level to provide safe water, sanitation and hygiene education to marginalized communities around the world.

When UCG teachers are off duty, then they are not unlikely to be found mixing under the crowd and joining in on the party. Yesterday, one of our teachers, Wonder, was even in the spotlight playing the guitar. Some of our teachers have a reputation of being pretty entertaining company at parties, aside from that, it is always useful to have them in your pub-quiz team

Especially after having moved out of Frascati, I value such opportunities to socialise as you don’t get to see all your friends as frequently anymore. It does sometimes feel a little bizarre that we have made the faculty not only the hub for our academic being but also established UCG as a place to let loose and wind down but that’s what makes our faculty unique and “homely”.

Greetings,

Eva
