How SA Caerus upgrades the UCG game

Last year, I have been very involved with UCG’s study association Caerus, as part of the board. My job within the board was to create and support committees and, in this way, build up the study association. Caerus has only existed for one year at that time, which means there was still a lot to be figured out. This year UCG, and Caerus alike, also tripled in size, meaning much more opportunities for events and members that would show up. It was great to see the new first years being directly so involved and joining and setting up new committees.

This year, with the association another time doubling in size, we have 13 committees. Its cool to see new ones like Civitas or MUCG being created, while good old committees like the SOC or Sleeping Lasagnas are still in the run.

In my first year at UCG, I joined the SOC, the Social Committee of Caerus, which was then one of the three committees that existed. With the SOC, we organized basically all social activities at that time, from the Halloween party to a hitchhiking competition to the annual Assassins game. Organizing and being in charge of all those events was really fun, and it directly made me pretty involved in our study association.

Over time it has become pretty different: SOC is now one of thirteen, and an even wider range of activities is organized by all these different committees. We for example have the yearbook committee, which publishes a yearbook at the end of the year. The last (and first hard-copy) yearbook turned out great, and in the pretty close community we have, is a good way for everyone to remember the last year. Another one is Civitas, which organizes charity events, to raise money for a charity that will be voted on every year.

These are just a couple of the wide range of committees, which you can check out here. I recommend joining a committee in your first year, as it is a great way to improve your organizational skills and become actively involved in the study association, while at the same time easily meeting new people. Especially as a large part of studying at UCG is the community around it, it is fun to be part and help build up the community in this way. Plus, it is an easy way of finding people who want to do the same stuff as you do: with some 300 members there are definitely people interested in the same activities.

For me, Caerus has become a main part of my UCG experience, and I would definitely recommend getting involved. I have just touched upon probably less than 5% of what it includes, so to create a complete image you should check out this site. You can (and should) also stay posted on this blog, as alike the earlier post about the ski trip, there will probably be more posts on events to come.
