Wiene van Hattum (1952) graduated in Law, specialization Criminal Law, at the University of Groningen in 1976. After her studies she was partner in a lawyer’s office as expert in Criminal Law and Immigration Law. After her switch-over to the University of Groningen in 1986 she became lecturer and specialized in International Criminal Law and Penitentiary Law. In International Criminal Law her particular interest goes to the international and historical aspects of the double-jeopardy rule (non bis in idem). Her PhD thesis is related to this subject:  'Non bis in idem. De ontwikkeling van een beginsel', Groningen 2012.

In Penitentiary Law Wiene van Hattum is doing research on life- sentences in a historical and international comparative perspective. She organizes a so- called Discussion Group for students who are interested in the prison system. This group pays a visit every month to a prison for long term prisoners. Van Hattum leads the discussions between students and prisoners and successively between students and members of the prison staff.

Van Hattum co-organizes a meeting group of lawyers and psychiatrists and other experts in behavioral sciences on subjects concerning the two professions, i.e. the mentally disturbed offender and criminal law. She is editor of the publications of this group of experts, collected in the periodical ‘Ontmoetingen, Voordrachtenreeks van het Lutje Psychiatrisch-Juridisch Gezelschap’,

Since 2008 Van Hattum is president of the Foundation Forum Levenslang and blogger on the website Together with Daan Cormnelissen she is editor of the Nieuwsbrief Forum Levenslang,
