ir. T. van der Leij

PhD student

In the 1990s I studied biology at Wageningen University & Research. My master's thesis was on the role of ethics in environmental education, and it was supervised by prof. Arjen Wals (Wageningen University) and prof. Bob Jickling (Yukon College/Lakehead University, Canada). During my stay at Yukon College (Whitehorse) I worked with prof. Bob Jickling as a teaching assistant in several courses (environmental ethics, environmental philosophy, environmental education).

After completion of my biology master’s program, I obtained my teaching degree at Utrecht University. From 1998 onwards I have been working as a biology teacher in several Dutch high schools (Farel College (Amersfoort), Het Streek (Ede), Savornin Lohman Mavo (Hilversum); since 2007: Hondsrug College (Emmen)).

In 2016 I received a DUDOC-bèta scholarship. “DUDOC-Bèta” is a science teacher program for conducting PhD research in the field of science education, in addition to our job at school. The program runs from 2016 to 2021 and it is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW).

The research is being conducted at the Institute for Science Education and Communication (ISEC) of the University of Groningen.
