Sander Hölsgens is an anthropologist and educator working with sound and moving image to explore everyday practices. As a lecturer, he teaches practice-led courses in visual ethnography, audiovisual culture, and storytelling.

In 2018, Sander finished his PhD at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, researching skateboarding in South Korea. Alongside his research, he co-founded Pushing Boarders to trace the social impact of skateboarding worldwide.

During his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Groningen, he researches the intersection of documentary practices and activism – as co-initiator of the NWO Smart Culture project Documenting Complexity.

As the organiser and curator of the Field Recordings Festival, he presents work across anthropological cinema, sound art, and experimental film. Sander acted as the Visual and New Media editor of Cultural Anthropology between 2015 and 2019, co-edited two volumes by the Film Place Collective, and is currently working on a documentary with professional skateboarder Candy Jacobs. 

Sander also works as a lecturer at the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at Leiden University.
