Research interests

I study basic questions on the ecology, evolution and physiology of bacteria. In particular, I focus on understanding how do bacteria sense and respond to their environment, how do they communicate with each other and how do these behaviors vary across individuals. I use a bottom-up approach where I combine various experimental techniques including single-cell analyses, experimental evolution and molecular genetics with mathematical modelling and computer simulations. The main topics I study include

  • Competence induction by quorum sensing in Streptococcus pneumoniae
  • Phenotypic hetereogeneity in Escherichia coli during nutrient shifts
  • Antibiotic tolerance upon nutrient starvation
  • Evolution of antibiotic resistance
