Description of PhD
SPICE: Scientific Personae in Cultural Encounters
Project SPICE is an international project with professors, postdocs and PhD’s from the University of Groningen, the Catholic University of Leuven and Stockholm University. The project deals with the concept of 'scientific persona' or 'scientific identity' understood as what it takes to be seen and recognised as a succesful scholar. My own PhD focusses on researching this concept on an individual level by writing a biography of British medieval historian Eileen Power (1889-1940). Power was one of the first historians to do women's history and would become the second woman professor of Economic History at the London School of Economics. She was also well-known for her feminism, pacifism, popular radio broadcastings and her love of fashion.
