P.E. Lopes Leão, PhD
Pedro Leão is originally from Brazil. In 2009 he began to study Microbiology and Immunology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro(UFRJ), graduating in 2013. During his undergraduate(2009-2013), Masters (2013-2015) and Ph.D. (2015-2018), he was involved in projects regarding the diversity, ecology and cell biology of magnetotactic bacteria under the supervision of professors Ulysses Lins and Fernanda Abreu on the same University (UFRJ). In 2017, he was nominated for a PDSE fellowship and could spend one semester at UC Berkeley developing his molecular biology techniques under the supervision of professor Arash Komeili. In 2018 he obtained a Visiting Professor position at UFRJ and, in 2019 he was granted an FSE Fellowship at the University of Groningen under the supervision of Dr. D.J. Scheffers. His primary interest is focused on understanding the process of membrane organization and compartmentalization in Prokaryotes using a combination of molecular biology, light, and electron microscopy techniques.
