Being diagnosed with a chronic illness can have a far-reaching impact on people's psychological well-being. But why do some patients deal with the consequences of an illness better than others? Studying personal goal pursuit and goal adjustment gives us insight into this question. Related questions are: Which goals are important for patients, and what happens when they are nog longer attainable? And how can we help patients succesfully adjust to their illness? Aiming to answer these, and related, questions, is the main focus of my current research.

Additionally, I am transfering my knowledge concerning goals from a psycho-oncology setting, to an educational setting. In a longitudinal cohort study, we are currently studying personal goals and well-being of medical students. With this study, we aim to identify factors which can ensure a healthy future health-care professional, as well as a sustainable health-care system.
