dr. J.E. Glas

Eelco Glas' research concentrates on Graeco-Jewish literature in the Roman world, particularly the works of Flavius Josephus. His doctoral dissertation investigates the problem of Flavius Josephus’ dual role as author and character in the Bellum Judaicum. It offers the first systematic literary analysis of this aspect of Josephus' work, asking how Josephus' presentation of his character be explained in the context of the Bellum as a whole, as a history written in Greek and addressing a local audience in first century Rome.
Glas is currently designing a new project on literary representations of "authorship" by Jewish and Christian intellectuals in the first two centuries CE, seeking to explain these representations in relation to broader intellectual trends in contemporary Greek and Roman scholarship.
