dr. J.A.A. Swart
Jacobus (Sjaak) A.A. Swart is associate professor at the Science and Society Group (SSG) of the Energy and Sustainability Research Institute Groningen (ESRIG) of the University of Groningen. He studied biology as his major topic and geology and philosophy as minor topics and specialized on mathematical modeling of biological processes, especially in the field of ecology. Subsequently received his PhD in mathematical modelling of receptor dynamics in the human brain. Thereafter he moved into the fields science and technology studies with respect to the natural and life sciences. In this field he is especially interested in ethics of life sciences and in the social dynamics of innovation processes. He published on ethical and social aspects of nature conservation and restoration, animal experimentation, ethics of wild animals management, and biotechnology. He is editor for the journal Restoration Ecology(especially for social aspects) and a member of the COGEM (Netherlands Commission on Genetic Modification, subcommittee Ethical and Societal Aspects) which provides scientific advices to the government on the environmental and health risks and on ethical and social aspects of GMOs. Dr. Swart is also scientific project coordinator of the EAfrica funded international research consortium “Addressing Societal Challenges of Biotechnology. Towards balanced innovation”. This project aims to research societal and environmental aspects of biotechnological innovation in African countries.
