PhD research project titled 'Growing Roots and Wings: young Angolan refugees in Cape Town negotiating their identity, mobility and aspirations', carried out at the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Cape Town, funded by the  'Mobile Africa Revisited' programme at African Studies Centre, University of Leiden, and to be concluded at the Department of African Languages and Culture, University of Gent in 2020.

My thesis explores notions of identity, home and belonging of young Angolan refugees growing up in Cape Town. How do they see themselves? What are their support networks and how do they connect with others? How do these young urban Africans negotiate im/mobility and (not) belonging within the systems of restrictions put on them? And how do they maintain their 'capacity to aspire' and develop strategies for their future?
