I grew up in Germany, where I did a bachelor’s in physics and mathematics at the University of Münster and my postgraduate study, at the University of Köln (Cologne). For my thesis research at the Max-Planck-Institute of Radio Astronomy in Bonn, I developed a sub-mm ring laser for far-infrared spectroscopy. In 1994 I moved to the Netherlands and graduated at the quantum optics group at the University of Leiden on “Infrared detection- and mixing properties of MIM diodes".
By chance, I became a substitute teacher at a local high school and discovered my passion for teaching. I, therefore, decided to start a career as a high school teacher for physics and mathematics. I especially enjoyed sharing my research experience and explaining modern physics. In my classes, I prefer to not strictly follow any textbook method, rather adapt the content and kind of presentations to the students in the classroom ‘on the flight’. I especially enjoyed being part of a group of teachers who were developing and testing a new physics curriculum for modern physics (PMN and NiNa).
I was contented when quantum physics became part of the regular physics high school curriculum in the Netherlands. At the same time, however, I was aware of the fact that exam requirements could reduce quantum physics to unconnected, testable item. I was interested in finding out which parts of quantum physics were important, fascinating and suitable for secondary school students. In 2016 I got the chance to do this in a PhD project at the University of Groningen.
The working title of my research project is: Quantum Physics in Upper Secondary Schools – Why? What? How? The relation between learning quantum concepts and students’ beliefs about Nature of Science.
