PhD Dissertation: Social innovation in community-based food collectives
My PhD dissertation explores social innnovation in community-based food collectives, alternatively, citizen-initiated projects organized around food. The coupling trends of a push for citizen-participation/action and reactions to an environmentally and socially unsustainable food system has led to the rise of such actvities across the globe (though I specifically focus on projects in the (northern) Netherlands and the United States). I look at three kinds of initiatives: an urban food waste project, (urban, peri-urban, and rural) community gardens, and (urban and rural) ecovillage communities. I'm interested in how these projects are organized, how they can be enabled, as well as their implications for wider-scale food system sustainability.
