Anne Steenbakkers started her studies in child development at the University of Leiden in 2007. She chose Clinical Child Development as her major and wrote her master thesis under supervision of Dr. Stephan Huijbregts about aggression of boys in VMBO high school tracks. Anne additionally did an exchange year at the University of Michigan in the United States; following courses and doing a research internship.
In January 2014 she started the research that lead to her dissertation at the Department of Special Needs Education and Youth Care at the University of Groningen, titled: 'What I really needed was a voice': The psychosocial needs of youth in family foster care and the impact of traumatic experiences. Under supervision of Prof. Hans Grietens, Dr. Steffie van der Steen and Dr. Ingunn T. Ellingsen, she studied the experiences and needs of youth in family foster care. As of January 2018, Anne is employed as post-doctoral researcher at the University of Groningen. She is studying the participation of children during the out-of-home placement decision and is developing a tool that assists children in family foster care in expressing their needs.
